Mission: With Gleaming Eyes
Location: Ithaca II
Timeline: MD04 - 0830 hrs
1083 words - 2.2 OF Standard Post Measure

ON:

During the trip from the Colossal, Xava was able to get a few hours of sleep, though with the combination of anticipation, studying for the mission, and a sugar rush, she didn't get a full night.

Upon landing, Xava equipped herself with a phaser and a tricorder. Slinging her duffel bag containing her personal possessions over her shoulder, she exited the craft.

Leah marched out of the prefab building being used as their research and medical laboratory as the shuttle landed; interestingly, it didn't bear the marks of Athena, but rather another Starfleet registry. She frowned as the hatch opened and a group of unfamiliar faces descended from the ramp.

"Hello? What's going on?" she called out, suddenly noticing the supplies they had brought with them. "Are you a relief contingent from Starfleet?" she wondered.

Stifling a yawn, Xava waited for someone to say something, but when no one did, she took charge and replied.

"We're from the Colossal, sent to help. I'm Lieutenant jg Xava Denlorr from the science department." She considered the traditional Shagra greeting gesture, but it didn't seem like the right time. "What do you need us to do?"

While Xava was addressing the people on the surface, a group of about 5 other people in blue were preparing to unload supplies from the shuttle. One was Ensign Sall, a young-looking Bolian, and he was holding a PADD with an inventory of supplies. He approached the unfamiliar woman Xava was talking to and held out the PADD. "Here's a copy of the inventory, ma'am!"

Michael walked out from the lab hot on the heels of Leah. There was perhaps nothing he hated more than being disturbed while on the verge of a breakthrough. He overheard the teams as they unloaded the shuttle speak of resupply, and for the life of him Michael could not recall requesting a resupply. However, he knew that it could have been the Captain who made the request. "Right good morning..." he spoke to the group working on the shuttle. "Welcome to Ithaca... If you can take it from here I need Lieutenant Bailey so we can finish putting this thing to bed...." His voice trailed off as something else occurred to him, Michael snapped his fingers. "Oh seeing as this place is under quarantine at the moment. Who ordered your presence?"

Sall looked at the man who joined the conversation. "We had orders from the Captain of the Athena to report directly to a Lt. Commander Ki, sir."

"Ah well then it is your lucky day. I am Dr Ki. But, I am in the middle of curing a planet, so what can I do for you?" Michael replied. He tried to be cordial, but everything for the moment just came out short. Every moment he spent chatting was a moment less that the cure slipped through his fingers.

Xava wrinkled her nose at the doctor's curt comment. She and the others were the new arrivals that needed to be briefed and given assignments. "Doctor, we are all qualified to help you cure a planet. Please give us tasks to perform."

Michael took a deep breath, it was insanely frustrating to be disturbed during a breakthrough. However, the newcomers could take some things off his plate. He turned toward Didrea first. "Lieutenant, it seems that our Counselor one Lieutenant Commander Savin has gone missing. I asked him to collect some samples from the Metis and while we were able to get the samples and his tricorder, something environmental blocked our transport of him. He was taken by the Cardassians. Would you please find him?" He then turned toward Xava. "Lieutenant my apologies for being short, we are on the verge of breakthrough, and it is hard to be interrupted when this close. But perhaps you can assist in helping us figure out why this virus affects hybrids so intensely."

"Thank you, Doctor," said Xava. "If you show me my station, I'll begin working immediately."

Zade, who had been getting familiar with the area, had quietly joined the group with Mason when Xava asked for tasks, and blinked when Ki addressed her. To the point... I'm starting to notice a trend with this crew, she mused. Standing a little straighter, she gave a short nod to the doctor. "Aye, sir."

Leah shook her head a little; Ki had been stressed since they arrived. Probably didn't deal with not being the one in control. Either way, she approached the teal-uniformed Lieutenant from the Colossal. "Lt Denlorr, right? Lieutenant Bailey. I've been helping Dr Ki with the work here. My background is more in the realms of spectral phenomenon than biology, though. What about you?"

"In order to be more valuable in service, I chose to study all aspects of science rather than to specialize," said Xava. When she was in the academy and learned about a Vulcan named Spock, she was so fascinated with his abilities and accomplishments, she patterned her studies to be like him.

"A generalist, then. That could be helpful. We should get you up to speed on our work so far once we're inside," Leah nodded.

"I'll do my best," said Xava.

Zade turned her attention to Mason. First the security chief, now the counselor? "You got a couple hours to spare, Chief?"

"Yes ma'am," Mason replied, "seems like I do." He couldn't very well say no when a senior officer was missing, now could he? He turned to Ki. "Do you know where he was last seen sir?"

"From the transporter trace and data from his tricorder he was in the planetside hospital in the restricted area..." Michael began as he spoke to to Zade. He then addressed Bailey and Denlorr as they walked back into the lab area. "We have figured out how to isolate the virus and even kill it, in non living material. The next step is learning how and why it effects hybrids worse then others, then we can test our cure on a living patient. Do either of you have any speculations?"

"We'll have to get a look at the samples from the other patients. Hopefully that'll give us some insight," Leah replied.

"Agreed! Lieutenant Denlorr perhaps you can work on simulations on living patients. We need to get the numbers on that before we can consider testing this on an actual subject. But time is indeed running out." Michael replied as he stepped into the makeshift lab.
