Doctor Reed let out a small sigh as he pressed the hypospray to the blonde woman on the biobed as she groaned in agony. The giant gash on her left arm was hastily bandaged by another person that had helped usher her into sickbay. He gestured to a nurse to help the woman off the bed and to go sit down on the deck someplace out of the way. Triage space was at an extreme shortage today. The Prometheus-class wasn't designed for mass casualty events and as such, the destruction of the U.S.S. Pico was certainly taxing all available resources. The entire sickbay medical staff was at work trying to stabilize the survivors that were trickling into the area but he had to start placing the stable patients in the hallway. A Bolian officer wearing a uniform with red lining laid on the bed next to where he stood and started convulsing violently. Reed ran over and started a scan on the man as he yelled, "Ten cc's cordrazine!"
Santu stepped into the sickbay, seeing all the injured around them, she felt like she needed to help. P'rel still by her side. She knew that the trauma to the head would require a quick check up, even with the woman being more lucid it was not safe yet to have her walk around. Then there was Ausra, who definitely had a complex fracture and was risking more extensive damage with every moment they waited with checking and fixing the internal damage. Then there was Jerant, who seemed to have similar trauma as Ausra, though it would appear to be less extensive from the looks of it.
Jerant looked around, cradling his arm to his chest. The place looked busy, and he felt that anyone attending to him now was better served attending someone far more injured than he. Though he was in pain, he was sure he could tolerate it a bit longer if necessary.
Leaning on Taeler, P’rel tried to sync her leg movements to make herself an easier load to support. Lucidity was returning, and her first instinct was to take on the role of doctor amidst the chaos.
Santu spotted a nurse before she spotted the doctor, "Get me a neurocortical monitor set for a Vulcan female," she moved P'rel to the side and sat her down in one of the seats and pointed the nurse in her direction before heading deeper into sickbay seeing the doctor attending a convulsing Bolian male, "I have a human female with an oblique traumatic fracture of the ulnar and radius, it may be displaced, I'm worried about compartment syndrome."
"Yeah, I always compartmentalize my feelings," Ausra joked as she sat down on an empty part of the floor. She wasn't severely injured and would save the beds for others.
The Bolian man started to lay still after the hypo injection started to take affect. Reed turned to see the first officer behind him and he nodded, grateful for another expert in the room. He turned back to the nurse and said, "Monitor his settings and if nothing else goes wrong, hit him with another dose in ten minutes. His immune system naturally combats cordrazine."
"Jerant, come with me, Nurse get me an Osteogenic stimulator," Santu was like a whirlwind through the chaos in sickbay. It felt like coming home, even though she never really had a home to come back to.
Watching her, he knew better than to object. Yet, he sensed she seemed more at ease here that back on the bridge. "You act as though you belong here," he said softly as he followed her, "you seem more at ease here."
"What is familiar isn't always what's best for you," Santu replied as she ran the osteogenic stimulator over Jerant's broken bone, luckily it was rather a clean break and it had only affected his radial bone, "just another minute or so and your bone should be good to go. Though, these things might seem like magic wands keep in mind that your body still took a beating, and the muscles surrounding the bone will be sore for a week or so."
The Betazoid nodded. "I'll try to remember ma'am. No freerunning for a week then?" he asked, clearly disappointed.
Sitting where she had been placed, P’rel didn’t fancy her odds in trying to reach the medication equipment herself; “you” she said abruptly, summoning a blue shirted crewman moving between patients, “there is no logic in my being here any longer than necessary, yes?”. The young human looking man nodded in a somewhat wary agreement; “Good, in that case Formazine, Synaptazine, Bicaridine. Go”. She ordered, watching as he wandered off towards what she assumed was a medication stow. Resting her pulsating head back against the headrest on the chair, she looked up in response to a particularly cautious "uhhhh ma'am?". Opening one eye, she saw it was subordinate crewman, Petty Officer Saghir.
Having noticed P'rel ordering a cocktail of drugs to self medicate Santu intercepted the nurse the Vulcan officer had sent on her way. She knew of P'rel's background in medicine but it was never a good idea to self-medicate. Having taken the stuff the Nurse was carrying back to the intel officer she inspected the medications that had been ordered. Realising what the cocktail was meant to do she gave a short nod. She wasn't a fan of heavy medications but also knew that they needed the Lieutenant at peak performance levels. She loaded up the first hypo and pressed it in the officer's neck, not mingling in the conversation she was having with her subordinate. Taking in the readouts from the neurocortical monitor she adjusted the second batch of medications. It should keep the woman running for at least another 48 hours, "I expect you to report back in with Doctor Reed in two days for a follow-up."
P'rel shot a begrudging look at Taeler, indicating her agreement before the Bajoran walked away, followed swiftly by Saghir. Craning her neck to loosen her muscles, she stood up; a brief assessment noting largely that she didn't fall over told her she was sufficiently well enough to return to duty. Tapping her comm badge again, she thought it best to heed the advice given to her and work as a team player; seeing as Taeler was off playing Doctor she had only one logical choice "Computer, locate Captain Kane". =/\= Commander Kane is on the bridge =/\=. Leaving sickbay, she only hoped that the turbolifts were operational again; even with her symptoms placated with medication she didn't much fancy a seven deck climb...
With that Taeler made her way back to the science officer that had parked herself on the ground, Doctor Reed tending to her fracture, "Do you need any help?"
Ausra began to shake, she really wasn't sure why. She wasn't in pain currently but the thought of being in pain again made her queasy. Was this shock? She hadn't lost a lot of blood or anything but had been through a bit of a scary experience she wasn't known for her bravery.
Doctor Reed wiped the sweat from his brow, which was a result of the number of people in sickbay causing the temperature to rise somewhat. He let out a sigh and shook his head. "I think we're slowly getting things under control. Having the patients stabilized is the focus but we're almost there." He looked around the room and the open door that showed people sitting outside in the hallway. "I think we can manage from here, ma'am. Thanks for the offer though," he said with a smile. "I imagine it must be difficult to balance your role as first officer with that of your first instinct as a healer."
Jerant moved to Ausra's side, gently resting his hand on her healthy arm. "Look at me ma'am... focus on me while they work. Can you tell me about your work?" He wanted to see if he could distract her as he cast Noah a concerned look. "Is she supposed to shake like that?" he asked.
"I'm okay," she said through chattering teeth, "I think it's just the adrenaline wearing off."
Reed glanced over and saw the head of the science department shaking more with each moment as she tried to downplay her own injuries. He nodded as he gently took out his tricorder scanner and ran it around Ausra in a circular patter. "Do you know what physical injuries she obtained?" He knit his brow as he read the tricorder results. "She's going into some type of shock. I'm not sure if it's from the adrenaline dump or something else." He guided her over to the only bio bed that had just been vacated and helped her lay down before tying the ceiling sensors to her bio monitor readout screen at the head of the bed.
"No sir," the Betazoid answered apologetically as he followed, "Maybe Commander Taeler has? I took a fall myself, and my first concern was for the counselor, he's my charge sir as he's deaf. "
"I fell and broke my arm," Ausra said as she could clearly hear them talking about her. "I don't think I hurt anything else." Her teeth were chattering with the effort but she decided her voice sounded pretty clear.
Santu was about to walk away, back to her duties on the bridge, when she heard the question, "It's probably on the computer record, from the looks of it on the bridge it's an oblique traumatic fracture of the ulnar and radius, it's most likely displaced, if I were you, I'd worry about compartment syndrome.
Doctor Reed nodded as the first officer headed out into the corridor. "Thanks for the warning, commander." Turning back to his patient, he gently pressed the much-used hypospray against her neck, sending pain killing medicine into her bloodstream. "The cordrazine will help with the pain." He then jabbed another one into her arm. "The vortrexine will help stabilize your heartrate."
He then wheeled over a small cart from the wall and positioned Ausra's arm onto it's small resting table underneath the device while his fingers tapped the control pad, bringing the machine to life.
Suddenly, a neon purple light cascaded onto her arm, causing her skin to shimmer as the device worked to locate the damaged bones and reset them into a proper position. He kept his eyes focused intently on the work. It was a delicate procedure and he didn't need any problems at such a critical juncture.
Ausra stared at a piece of his hair and tried not to think about what he was doing for fear that it would make her nauseous. This worked pretty well as he seemed to be doing things that already made her feel better. Now she was just tired, drained of energy.
Reed offered Ausra a reassuring smile. "You'll be good as new in no time. Just lay back and focus on your breathing." He continued to work the machine over her forearm and noticed that the slightly odd shape was healing quite well. Once it was done, he switched off the power and slowly placed her arm back at her side before wheeling the contraption back along the wall. "Rest a bit and I'll come back to check on you in a few minutes."
"Okay," she said quietly. "Thanks Doctor." She closed her eyes and focused, like he said, on her breathing. But it didn't take a doctor to tell that she was already calmer.
