Adding to the pile

The smell of blood, of various origins, was in the air in sickbay. First there had been a wave of people seeking sanctuary in sickbay, then the first wave of wounded had come in. By now, Savin had lost count on the amount of injured and even dead. The morgue was filled beyond capacity and even the wards had to be shared. Injuries varied from mere cuts and bruises to severely crushed limbs and even dismemberment.

There was no time for a break, those on duty would have to grab a quick bite to eat or a cup of water between the rush of patients. At least the bugs hadn't reached sickbay yet, Savin mused as he and a nurse helped the most recent patient off the bed and safely delivered her into the hands of her waiting colleagues. He was keenly aware of the sense of fear that lingered and the waves of agony battered against his mental wards. It was getting increasingly difficult to block it all out.

Myfanwy, her uniform splattered with blood and less identifiable liquids, staggered into sickbay. She supported an even more wounded security officer. Myfanwy handed off the wounded security officer to one of the nurses, who led him to a just vacated biobed.

"We were ambushed by one of the bio-bugs, it just broke through one of the doorways. Johanssen took the brunt of it before we vaporized it with concentrated phaser fire," Myfanwy said, leaning on the end of the BioBed. Her left arm and leg were badly torn up and had been quickly wrapped.

Savin ushered her to a freed up bed. "It seems like there is no way to win," he answered grimly as he carefully unwrapped her arm. "Can you move your fingers?" He asked, "and your wrist?" While her skin seemed shredded quite deeply, scans showed that by some small miracle the nerves had not been severed. The leg was another matter he discovered upon examination. "I can save your leg," he told her, "but only if you can manage to stay off for a while," he told her. "You can help defend sickbay while sitting still, if necessary." He understood everyone would be needed to save the ship but what good would it do if they were in no shape to do so?

Myfanwy was able to move her fingers and wrist but without any particular grace. She followed the instructions. "I would be happy to be off my leg, Doctor. You will not be surprised to learn that it hurts like the dickens." She shifted on the bed to minimize the weight on her injured leg, consciously avoiding looking at it. For all the pain, she seemed to be holding herself together.

"If you give me a datapad, I can help with the organization," she said.

Savin gestured towards an available orderly to get her a PADD while he worked on her injuries. "I do not understand," he stated, wondering if he had misinterpreted her words. His own PADD was in his office, forgotten when the mayhem started. It was useless in current circumstances anyway, with sickbay about overrun with people needing sanctuary and the great many of injured crewmembers. "What is a dickens and why does it hurt?" He firmly wrapped up her arm as he occasionally glanced at her to see what she was saying.

"It just means that it really hurt, Doctor," said Myfanwy, accepting a datapad from a passing orderly. "An expression from my home." She called up the medical organization grid on the device with her free hand, balancing the unit on her lap.

"I see..." He finished the bandage and ran his scanner across her arm. "Do not move it too much, but try to keep using it all the same to avoid the limb going stiff." He shifted his attention to her leg, which seemed to look worse than it actually was. "I am going to tear away the fabric," he warned her, "cleaning out the injury may sting."

"I can take it," said Myfanwy, focusing her attention on the data. She hissed as the cleaning began but held still, apart from her fingers working the screen.

Savin ran the dermal regenerator over the afflicted area to heal the majority of the damage. Then he proceeded to wrap her leg in a colourful bandage, not by choice but by necessity because it was what he had on hand. With a lot of systems down the medical staff has to use the replicators sparingly, as well as equipment. "How does this feel?" He asked, making eye contact once more.

"Much better," she said through an not entirely forced smile. "Thank you, Doctor. I will be fine on my own for a bit. I see you have others to tend to."

Savin nodded. "I will come back to check on you later," he promised, "and should you find a sudden change in how you feel, have a nurse alert me and I will come right back."

Myfanwy nodded. Looking at where she could tap power to get additional medical replicators back online.
