Mission:
In the Family
Location: Deck 7 - Main Sickbay
Timeline: MD-06
734 words - 1.5 OF Standard Post Measure
Kane, accompanied by Santu, arrived into sickbay to find the team there already hard at work. The crew of the Glory was relatively small compared to a full-sized starship, so there was only a half-dozen of them actually being treated. He spied the Ambassador's envoy sat upon a biobed, a cut on his head but otherwise apparently only dazed. Seeing his look, the young man motioned to another bed, where the Ambassador herself was laid unconscious.
"Doctor," Kane announced himself to Reed, approaching. "What's her status?"
"I... oh." Santu had to stop herself from stepping up and reading the medical charts. It would take some getting used to not being the resident doctor anymore. She gave Reed a smile and motioned for him to take the floor, "Pardon me for interrupting, doctor."
Doctor Reed quickly smiled at the commander. "No apology needed, ma'am." He then turned to the captain and said, "Most of the crew have sustained minor injuries. Small contusions, varying degrees of lacerations but nothing too serious except for a few fractures." He turned his attention to the ambassador. "She hit her head pretty hard and sustained a concussion. I've given her something for the swelling. I'm keeping her sedated until we see if the swelling dies down. If not, I'll have to perform surgery to relieve stress on the brain."
"So she's unconscious," Kane surmised with a deep sigh. "Honestly, I'm not sure it's necessarily a bad thing; I can't imagine how intolerable she would have been if she'd been conscious." He nodded at the doctor. "What's your best guess on prognosis, Doctor?"
Santu bit her lower lip to keep a lid on the urge to step in here, it felt so familiar. The rush of tending to wounded in a stressful situation. It was something she knew. Something she knew how to deal with. Now she had to stand back and trust for the actual Chief Medical of the ship to do their job. She knew he was capable, probably more capable than her. Didn't help with the urge.
Reed mulled over the variables in his head and moved his head from side to side before answering, "The pulmozine has about an hour left before surgery is an option but I've seen worse head injuries that pull through so I'm cautiously optimistic, sir." He paused and then arched an eyebrow. "When she is well enough to speak, I can call for you, if you wish?"
"Do your best, Doctor." Kane glanced at Santu. "Right now we're short an Ambassador, having just arrived at our destination. Between us, diplomacy was never my strong suit..."
"I've had some practice..." Santu didn't really want to elaborate quite where that practice had come in, "Plus, I've read up on them and they might be more open to a female representative anyway."
Reed nodded and checked the biobed status display before walking off to see about another patient.
Watching the doctor go about his business, and the sight of several injured individuals scattered around the sickbay, Kane frowned to himself. They could have averted this situation had they been better prepared. Somehow beaurocracy and the rules of engagement had prevented him from acting - prevented him from trusting his instincts.
"Looks like we're the new face of Federation diplomacy," Kane sighed. He caught the eye of the young envoy sat blank-faced nearby. "I didn't catch your name before."
"Broll...Hamilton Broll." The young man, who was probably around the age of a final year cadet, shifted to a standing position. "I'm not really much of a diplomat, sir. I just follow the Lady Ambassador. Do what she says, that sort of thing."
Kane rolled his eyes, tossing a look at Santu.
"Well, now you're it, Envoy Broll. Time for you to fill Lt Commander Taeler and me in on what we've just walked into."
Reed took another glance in the direction of where the ambassador lay still. He hoped that it would be a matter of time before she would recover. Otherwise, the entire mission faced the distinct possibility of failure. He steeled himself against that thought. He would give every effort to ensure that she would pull through and stop more destruction.
