Personality & Traits
General Overview | Fierce, determined and known to be occasionally ruthless. Kane, as he prefers to be called, is known to those who served with him as a Starfleet Officer born to be a warrior. Indeed, one former commander referred to him as “almost Klingon” in a combat situation, yet others have reported a man who dragged his colleagues through the fire by sheer willpower alone. Regardless, anyone who has served with the man has stated that there are few others they would want by their side in a crunch. Kane is loyal, dedicated and driven in pursuit of efficiency in those who serve under him. He believes that Starfleet, as a military organisation, should be disciplined and effective first - explorers second. Over time, and with experience as a Commanding Officer, Kane's normally brutal and withdrawn style has faded somewhat. With events in his career being prevented from spiralling due to the loyalty and support of his trusted crew, he has allowed himself to look upon the longer-serving colleagues as friends and confidantes. |

Personal History | Born on Earth, Kane’s early life was tough. Coming from a family with (unknown to the young man) some shady connections, before he was even a teenager he was forced away from his family as law enforcement took apart the grim criminal activities his parents were a part of. Growing up in a care system with no real allies or friends, Kane learned one thing that forever remained with him: never to back down. Initially directionless, his penchant for a scrap led him to the brink of imprisonment himself, until he was forced into a Starfleet mentoring scheme with a Vulcan Commodore named J’onn. Incredibly, the Vulcan’s influence on the young tearaway was beyond what anyone expected; the boy learned discipline, structure, and above all, respect. He began to see the benefits of working with others toward shared goals, and how teamwork might just outweigh his natural inclination towards solitude and aggression. Kane joined Starfleet during the latter stages of the Dominion War. Even as a cadet, he witnessed firsthand some of the horrors of the war, and was near Starfleet Headquarters when it was attacked by the Breen. This coloured a lot of his early career, the young man’s passion stirring far more towards the goal of protecting and saving lives, his graduating class being made up of young men and women ready for action rather than the typical peaceful exploration Starfleet produced. Kane's career thus far has been exceptional; he certainly feels that has proven himself many times over the years in various crisis situations, always coming out on top. His reputation, however, is of a man who is willing to do whatever it takes to win - he is known to be competitive and ruthless, not a set of qualities Starfleet generally looks for in commanders. After around ten years serving on the USS Lakota as XO, Kane finally earned the respect of several Admirals with his timely rescue of the ship's Captain and many of the crew during a disastrous search & rescue operation. While still feeling as though he had been overlooked for so many years, Kane was glad to finally be granted a command of his own - and is now dead set on proving himself to be the sort of commander that Starfleet needs on the front lines. After three years of decorated service on the USS Athena, Kane was implicated in a terrorist plot to assassinate a Federation councilman and a number of Starfleet cadets. After the plot was discovered to be a frame-up, Starfleet Command responded by promoting him to the rank of Commodore, and command of a special tasks squadron known as 'Paladin Squadron'; a small unit of ships deployed in strategic emergencies to act as the front line in any crisis requiring a tactical response. |
