The stars were shooting by as the ship traveled at high speed. Savin was stood at the large window, staring out into space. He seemed lost in thought, oblivious to anyone present in the room. Next to him stood a mug of coffee that had long since gone cold, indicating he had been here for quite some time now.
Behind him a few steps, Myra stared at the same stars, her insecurities gnawing at her. The last few days had been filled with more movement, excitement and, dare she say, adventure than she’d had since… her academy days. Some part of her felt it was too much too quickly, while another part screamed in joy at all the new possibilities. She’d come to the conclusion that she could use some help sorting out how best to proceed.
She nodded to herself and took the few steps that would bring her to him. She stood still for a few moments, wondering if her reflection would attract his attention, but soon realized that was a lost cause. With a slight chuckle, she reached out and touched his elbow, making sure to keep enough distance, just in case her touch had a reactive effect.
Turning his head as he was startled from his thoughts, Savin smiled at the new arrival and noticed the kept distance. "I daresay I am controlled enough not to lash out when startled," he said softly. "What can I do for you lieutenant?" He figured the young woman needed assistance, why else would she have drawn him from his musings?
Myra smiled sheepishly, feeling like she’d been caught doing something she shouldn't have. “My apologies. I was hoping you might have a few minutes.” She looked around very briefly then focused her attention on him. “I’ve just arrived and I’ve had a few events… I think I need someone to bounce my feelings about the past few days off of. Might help organize things a little better within, and you might have a few pointers on how to get things running smoothly on this ship.” The andorian stopped herself. This was probably not the proper way of going at this. Maybe she should have taken an appointment.
"If I did not have time, I would make time, especially for someone in need," Savin reassured her, "would you like to sit somewhere? It is usually very quiet here in the evening, unless you would prefer somewhere more private. We can talk anywhere you wish, we are not confined to my office to do so."
Looking around, Myra sighed and shook her head. “Here is fine. It's nothing I find so embarrassing I can’t stand someone overhearing.” She stared at him for a moment and took the few steps between herself and the window. She leaned onto the wall and looked out for a moment. “I haven’t exactly had the best start in my career, but I’ve worked hard to make myself as useful and dependable as possible.” She offered a weak smile, thoughts on her previous affectation.
“So when I was transferred here, with a chance at … well, more, I was elated.” She looked down at her feet, seemingly somewhat ashamed. “I believe I may have gone a bit… overboard in my happy reactions.” She looked back up at the vulcanoid and tried at a smile.
"What would you define as not the best start?" Savin returned the smile with one of encouragement. "And why do you think you have gone overboard? And in what way?" He could see the embarrassment, sense it too but he still had no experience in reading the droop or twist of an Andorian's antennae. His experience overall with Andorians was extremely limited.
Myra turned her head towards her interlocutor and sighed. “Right. Yes. I got here pretty much as shore leave was announced. Something I haven’t had since I graduated, so that alone was something I was looking for. Then I learned I had been promoted and I kind of… lost it.” She shook her head, unable to hide a slight smile.
“I tried to keep it inside for a bit. Went to work and tried to get a feel for the new ship. But inside I was just bursting. Which is always a little difficult for me. See, I’m an ambassador's daughter. I was taught very young to temper my Andorian blood and keep a more even flow of emotion. But sometimes…it has to be alright to just let it all out right?”
Myra closed her eyes for a moment, trying to regain composure, as even trying to express her emotions of the precious few days was riling them back up. “I wasn’t exactly liked at my previous posting. I wasn’t exactly given opportunities to show my capabilities. So instead I used the time to widen my skills and show I could be determined and patient.” She offered a slight shrug. “A new assignment with a promotion meant everything was about to change. Gave me a big bag of emotions I wasn’t sure I knew how to deal with, so I went down to the planet and partied. Got into some trouble. Ran away from some trouble. And otherwise acted very much outside my usual track.”
She shook her head and tried a smile. “I’m a little worried my actions might reflect poorly on me or the uniform should it become known.” She quickly shook her head more aggressively, wands waving in alarm. “Not that I did anything illegal or anything like that! At least I don’t believe so. I just got a little carried away, and it's not something I really do… at least until now.“ She stared back into his eyes, uncertain.
"Have you considered using a sport or other leisure to let out your emotions, so you could be more composed while on duty?" Savin queried, "not that I consider showing emotions while on duty to be conduct unbecoming. Humans do it all the time, Klingons do it all the time, so why should you not? However, perhaps some kind of outlet while off-duty, could help you curb your excess of emotions, while on-duty?"
Myra frowned and stared into space for a moment. “I don’t believe they’ve ever been an issue while on duty. I don’t think I’m really worried on that front, although now that you mention it, having something that would let me…” She searched for words for a moment, her pause uncertain. “.. explore them without it being a burden to others, would probably be good. People rarely understand just how high maintenance Andorian emotions can be.” She grinned and offered a slight chuckle.
‘Im probably worrying about nothing. I just got carried away for a moment and let myself live, slightly too intensely.” She smiled, antennae relaxing. “I should check and see what activities people are engaging on the ship these days. Maybe find a sport or some other fun thing to let out some of my excess.” She cocked her head to the right and stared at her crewmate.
"What sport or activity do you usually engage in?" the counselor enquired, taking another sip of his tea, "there are several people engaging in a wide variety of sports. I know there is a program running in the evenings that contains a swimming pool, I use the gym to practice. My assistant uses the holodeck to run across buildings, which he finds extremely exciting." Savin shrugged. "I am certain there will be something that strikes your fancy. You are welcome to join me in the morning if you wish to spar." He offered a kind smile. "Just bear in mind I cannot hear you call."
Myra nodded. “Thank you. Mostly needed a sound board, and you were very good at that.” She winked at him and grinned. “I might just take you up on that offer. In any case, I think I just need to stop worrying about my outburst, and just try and make sure I don’t go so strong next time.” She took a step back and half bowed at him.
"That is my job, being a soundboard," the counselor smiled, "I am, after all, the chief counselor. And you are correct, you should not be concerned about your outburst. Just be yourself, and either people will accept you as you are, or they will not. And in the latter case, that would be their loss, would it not?"
Nodding, Myra's smile widened. "I guess it would, wouldn't it?" While she'd never been one to care that much about other people opinion of her, beyond superiors anyways, she did actually believe she had something to offer any potential relationship. "Thanks again. I'll see you." She offered another wink and headed towards the door, thoughts juggling through her mind.
