Once he was given the all-clear by sickbay and his injuries had been seen to, Savin first went by his quarters to get a shower and a clean uniform. He was met by a worried looking Jerant, who barely left his side safe for the moment where he insisted on privacy. "Come with me," he finally said, all but pulling the Betazoid along. "I require your presence as this is an official meeting."
Visibly relieved to be able to move normally again, Savin preceded his friend and aide to the captain's ready room, where he - somewhat impatiently - pressed the chime. He wanted this to be over with, so he could go back to his quarters and get some much needed rest.
"Enter." Kane had been meeting with the away team individually. That Savin wanted to meet now wasn't entirely unexpected, nor that his aide was with him. "Lieutenant. Are you recovering well?"
The counselor nodded as Jerant walked past him to take up a strategic position in the room. "Yes sir I am. I am relieved my injuries were less severe than I had actually anticipated though I will need to get some rest soon." He sat down across from the desk, folding his hands in his lap. "I must express my gratitude towards Lieutenant Sar's conduct. Without her assistance, I would not have been able to do what I was assigned to do."
"I'm sure she would say that she was just doing her job," Kane noted. "Although I hear you were very much attempting to do the same - with the Paratan Queen. Things could have been tricky had it gone particularly badly with her. Ignoring the obvious eventual outcome of course."
"I do not know what the obvious outcome would be," Savin admitted as he recalled his private meeting with her. "Initially, we had a pleasant conversation which took a very bad turn as soon as she brought up her own family and I asked a specific question. I have not been able to speak with her again, unfortunately." He paused. "During the public meetings, Lieutenant Sar was instrumental because of a telepathic link she shared with me, in the absence of my aide," he added. "It was exhausting to both of us to maintain, however, especially when we were injured and fleeing to save our lives."
Jerant cast him a sharp look as he mentioned a link, not quite sure he liked this development. Savin ignored it, keeping his eyes on the captain instead. "I still do not understand why the queen did not appear to the final meeting."
"That would be down to us here in orbit, I'm afraid," Kane explained. "We inadvertently led the Paratans to Duke Alonso, her brother, who was in fact leading a coup." He shook his head wearily. "I can imagine once she heard about it she was going to delay any talks until she knew he was dealt with. Unfortunately her delay only gave his people time to launch their rebellion."
"Ah that explains why she did not want to discuss her brother even if she did bring him up herself. The rebellion happened alright. The conference was violently disturbed and fighting broke out. Dessame was struck on her head and I believe she briefly lost consciousness. I was struck down as well though I do not believe I was out at any time. I did feel extremely nauseous and dizzy from then on.". He paused. "What will happen now? With their rebellion they probably have forfeited any chance of joining?"
"Certainly. And the fact that Starfleet representatives were about to be taken hostage..." Kane shook his head. "I doubt anyone will be going near that in a hurry. I imagine there will be some feelings of responsibility for that happening, but I don't believe we were ever in a position to win here. Both sides were out to manipulate us to claim legitimacy."
"I certainly felt like a hostage, being penned off in a separate section during most of the formalities. I have never been made to feel so second rate before," Savin admitted. "I feel like we were expected to respond. I did speak with the queen, alone, after I spoke up in the initial briefing. I am certain Commander Taeler has already mentioned this as I had briefed her on the conversation we had." He paused. "It was an amiable conversation, and she questioned me about how I could function with my disability. It turned sour when the conversation led towards family, a door she opened herself I should add. I had hoped to speak with her again but I doubt that will ever happen now. As counselor, it is my professional opinion that some might be willing to change their opinion about the difference in social status between men and women, but that most experience a certain reluctance. At first, the queen did not seem unwilling and open to change, but now I strongly feel this was all a farçe."
"A masquerade," Kane nodded. "Not unlike your evening's entertainment, I hear." He passed-over the thought rather quickly. "Well, it seems your aide has finally joined us and you can resume your duties more effectively it would seem. No doubt the other members of the landing party may need some aftercare. And I heard there was an incident with a couple of Lt Sar's security team that you might want to look into."
"Yes I am grateful for his presence,," Savin answered with the slightest of smiles towards Jerant. He arched a single eyebrow in evident surprise however, at the Captain's next words. "Oh? Can you tell me what happened?"
"A Trill Lieutenant and a Chief, I think." Kane shrugged. "I wasn't completely clear on names." It was a minor character flaw that he hadn't rectified recently. "I'm sure they'll be easy to identify."
"I have no doubt. Can you tell me about the incident sir? Having some knowledge may help me in better preparation to talk to them." He leaned back a little. "Have there been complaints about their conduct?"
"Not complaints, no," he said. "Observations. Sounds like a personal matter, there was some sort of confrontation. I don't know the details." He glanced between the two. "I'd suggest getting some rest, Mr Savin. Seems like you're going to need it."
Savin nodded. "Yes sir, I do need it. I feel exhausted, if I have to be honest." He glanced sideways at Jerant, then back at Kane. "I will try to speak with them tomorrow," he added, "but this evening and afternoon I am taking off to recover. Is that permitted?"
"By all means, Lieutenant. You've had a busy day," Kane nodded.
"Thank you sir." Savin slightly inclined his head in acknowledgement, then got up and left the office.
