Physical Description | Tall and relatively average in build, Kirral keeps healthy and active like most Starfleet officers, preferring to lead by example in all things. She has black hair, indicative of her Romulan father and her human mother's Japanese heritage, dark green eyes, and sharp features in general. Though she lacks the Romulan ridge on her forehead, she does have the pointed ears, as well as green-tinted blood, which can affect her complexion when flushed. Her human features are East Asian, though those are less pronounced due to her mixed heritage. |

Personality & Traits
General Overview | The result of an impromptu and impassioned relationship between a Tal Shiar officer and a Starfleet logistics officer, Kirral finds herself between two worlds, and her personality reflects this. A lifelong conflict between extremes of emotion and more rational, tempered thought has led to her unique adaptation in later life to use that emotion like an engine. She lets the energy drive her toward her goals, while performing a constant dance between the impulsive side of herself and the self-discipline she's tried to master through her years. She frequently incorporates both Eastern meditative practices from Earth and Vulcan strategies to keep herself in check, but is not afraid to allow her emotions to flow in the right situations, always trying to let both her heart and her head lead her at once. Results can be mixed, and success depends on the observer, but no one can argue against her level of drive and ambition in all she undertakes and the results that achieves.
Strengths & Weaknesses | + Ambitious and driven + Stronger than your average human + Creative and intelligent - Struggles with strong emotions (can come off either too cold or hotheaded) - Some difficulties with normal socializing due to mixed heritage - Prone to tunnel vision on a goal or mission and risk-taking to achieve success |

Ambitions | Kirral, above all, wants to follow in her family's footsteps and achieve prestige within Starfleet by doing her job and being nothing less than exceptional in her performance. Her father sacrificed himself trying to save Romulan refugees in the Hobus incident, and her mother is now Captain of a research vessel. With her step-father too being a fairly well accomplished officer and both her siblings also making their way into service, both the Romulan and the Human in her are in agreement on the competitive urge to leave her own, noble mark while in the service. Her current project is just the first stepping stone to that goal in her eyes.
Hobbies & Interests | Though she excels at all she undertakes, Kirral's interests in the sciences like her mother always guaranteed she'd end up in a blue shirt once graduating the Academy. In particular, she has exceptional mathematical and spatial reasoning skills, and she loves astrophysics in particular. She could have excelled as a helmsman, a pilot, a navigator, or any one of a dozen jobs in engineering, but it was astrometrics and astrogation where she focused herself (not because she was better at it, but because she loved it). Part of an accelerated program in her last few years at the Academy, Kirral worked under researchers on-site at the Academy and even developed her own, unique thesis to improve long-range sensor accuracy and enhance warp navigation techniques. Outside her intellectual pursuits, Kirral, more by necessity than genuine interest, practices meditation techniques, both Human and Vulcan, Yoga, and Tai Chi. |
Personal History | Kirral's past has never been a boring one. The build up to the Dominion Wars brought many of the galaxies great powers to a head, but also became the catalyst for Suren to meet a young Ensign Nagata and the two to become embroiled in the sort of corny passion one expects out of a spy novel. The details were never revealed in full to Kirral, even after her father's passing, but the consequences were plain for all to see; While the war built to a climax and concluded, young Kirral had only just begun to grasp why she was different and why she spent most of her time with her mother, her father coming and going at random, short intervals. The end of the Dominion War was the end of a period Kirral doesn't remember well either, but also one where her family dynamic was turned on its head. Her father was around more, but only for visits when he wasn't busy running off with shadier Starfleet types. And her mother, seemingly, forgot about Suren as far as Kirral was concerned. Not long after the Treaty of Bajor was signed, Kirral was getting used to a new man in her life she was supposed to call father, and a newborn little sister! But she was still the only one with pointed ears, and strong emotions only made her confusion worse. It was around this age of 4 or 5 that, out of concern for safety and her daughter's well-being, that Kirral was made to take up meditative practices and martial arts meant to channel her stronger emotions and help her find some peace. These efforts helped, and despite her stellar grades in school, Kirral was the constant black sheep amongst her peers. Fights or challenges that ended in dangerous stunts failed with serious injury were common, but the adults around the young Kirral always seemed patient and supportive. It wasn't until she was coming of age that she was really told of her heritage as half-Romulan and began to appreciate the real gravity of the situation. She studied texts, the language of her alien half, and was inquisitive with her father when he visited. All was looking brighter and less confusing for her, despite the prejudices she still had to overcome, until it wasn't. Kirral received news of her father's death not from her mother, but from reading a listing of KIA in all the media flurry over Hobus' sudden eruption and destruction of the Romulan Star Empire. Tales of a famed Spock stopping further damage, of the homeworld of half of her blood burning away did little to phase the 16 year old, all overshadowed by the loss of her only connection to her Romulan side. She doesn't remember much from that evening, but remembers well sitting in the ship's brig for several days while her mother negotiated with security to have her released, and then learning to apply temporary, ceremonial mourning tattoos to her face to alleviate her grief while those around her looked on, puzzled. Though her ambitions had always been clear, and her talent undeniable, Kirral from that point on felt different in her motivations for striving to make it into Starfleet Academy. Even if the goals had not changed, her emotions and how she felt about those goals had. Hotheaded anger was directed toward positive outcomes instead of inflicted on outsiders, and much of her personal ethos was derived from this period in her life. She had long ago resolved to embrace both sides of herself, even with the risks involved, and now she had the cooling embers of burning anger to temper and focus herself to do just that. Kirral left the USS Bunker Hill and a family she knew well, and loved, somehow relieved rather than saddened or scared. She would handle the Starfleet Academy like she handled all other challenges in her life, and nothing and no one was going to stop her. Suspicious classmates, either ignorant and mistaking her for a Vulcan, or outright passive aggressive, never deterred her. She proved herself in all of her classes and on her exams, she buried who she was in her studies and her research when even academics couldn't seem to keep pace with her drive for more. She graduated at the age of 23, already having research experience with many of her professors and on-site Starfleet scientists in her chosen field of astrophysics. With her own theories and research to undertake, Kirral pushed and strove for immediate assignment to a small scout ship, the USS Zenith, with an equally driven officer corps that helped the ambitious (and sometimes over-confident) new Ensign center herself and channel her energy into successes in the field. So many years, she'd been practicing similar things with herself, with her meditations and personal exercises. But now, with her first real crew and uncertain of anything but her own numbers in the lab, Kirral began to realize what a good Starfleet crew was like. They were supportive, effective, and they accepted her with open arms. They were a family. Whether blind luck on the assignment and its crew or not, Kirral had solidified her belief in the noble cause and ideals of Starfleet, and there was no going back. When her research showed promise, field data gathered sometimes at great risk, Kirral only grew more confident. And that confidence was infectious, apparently, as three years had gone by without her really noticing. Her research had reached a critical juncture, and her CO fast tracked her for assignment to a frontline warship for the real tests. She had her orders, she had her data, and she had all the confidence in the world. Time alone would prove if that was enough as she stepped off the runabout onto the deck of the USS Athena. |
